For the first time in a VERY long time, this weekend I unplugged for two hours. I went outside with my book, sat in my hammock and left my phone inside. No texts, no calls, no social media. Just me and my thoughts in the bright morning sun of a summer Sunday in July. It took about 10 minutes for me to suppress the feeling that I forgot something and the urge to go get my phone. Why do we feel guilty when we don’t immediately answer the electronic demon? Maybe you don’t but I do unfortunately. Maybe it’s because I am a Social Media Manager always online. Perhaps it’s because I’m a parent who never wants to be too far from the needs of her children. Maybe I’m just an online addict who needs therapy.
Once the shock of not having my device by my side passed it was very relaxing. No one was home and I could actually hear my thoughts without interruption. Did you know there are birds in the trees by my house and they sing to each other? I knew this and I see them but yesterday I HEARD them and listened and it was the loveliest sound.
It reminded me that in today’s world of 24 x 7 x 365 social media and being turned ON all the time that we have to remember to turn it off and regroup every now and again.
When was the last time you unplugged?
