Anyone who utilizes social media for their business knows that it takes time. Time to learn, time to manage, time to get good at and time to grow. There never seems to be enough time to get it done. One of the more frustrating things about social media is that sometimes it seems to take forever finding things to post and summarizing if you do that. Twitter, which in the beginning I did not find very useful, has taught me a very valuable skill: how to summarize! I find that I am much better at using less words to convey more meaning in less time. I attribute that directly to my use of Twitter and it’s character restrictions.
Not only has this helped me gain some time back, it has made me more efficient and in some ways a better communicator. Who knew that by cutting out words that I would actually say more? It’s true and amazing at the same time. So if you are on the cusp of deciding whether or not to use or keep using Twitter, I would say do it. Not only are the people using Twitter invaluable and full of great information, it is a tool that serves a unique purpose. The next time I give a Social Media class I will have to revise the section where I say that Twitter is only good for telling people what you are doing right now in 140 characters. This no longer is my sole perspective but as the social media landscape has evolved, so too has the tool itself and the people using it.
