Making social media a successful part of your business means that you may just have to dance like a monkey on fire. What do I mean by that? It means that you have to grab the attention of your followers like a dancing monkey on fire. Simply getting their attention is not enough, though. You must hold their attention by constantly offering them interesting and useful information. The WWW is a vast and expansive abyss where, like the stars in the sky, you can get lost among the masses. If you are using social media it isn’t enough to just type 140 words into the little box and hit “Tweet”. You need to be providing information regularly.
Why? Two reasons:
- The non verbal message of not providing regular content is that you are inconsistent in the way you handle your business and customers and that you don’t follow through. This will ride heavily on Sales coattails
- You need to keep your audience coming back. Turn your back for a minute and your competition will scoop up and woo them
For those of us old enough to remember the sitcom “Welcome Back Cotter”, we all remember Ron Palillo’s character Horshack and his unforgettable signature “ooh ooh ooh” outbursts in class. Yes, I AM that old. Regardless of whether you thought he was annoying or funny, he got the attention of the entire class and especially Mr Cotter, his intended audience. In a way, Ron portrayed a monkey on fire. Putting forth information that will grab your audiences attention must include providing content of a rather eccelctic but relevant nature which is regular, current, interesting, engaging, informative, provocative, thought provoking, cutting edge and probably about 50 other adjectives which elude my mind at the moment. By doing this it will help shoot you to the surface of the proverbial digital abyss and help get you noticed. Dance monkey dance!
