There is something to be said for having a home inventory list. You never know when something unexpected will happen resulting in a loss. As they say, you have to cover your %$@. Well some people over the years have taken that to the extreme. Some of the most peculiar things ever insured are items that would not be lost in a fire or flood, nor are they items that would be on any home inventory list. These insurables are actually parts of the human anatomy and were, in fact, insured for millions of dollars. Some of the weirdest insurance policies ever written are from the most famous people we have known over the years. Some of these include:
Heidi Klum – Once insured her legs for $2.2 million. Both legs are not insured equally however. One leg is insured for $1.2 million, and the other for $1 million because it has a scar!
Bruce Springstein – insured his voice for $6 million dollars back in his heyday in the 1980’s
Troy Polamalu – insured his flowing locks for $1 million dollars
America Ferrara– insured her smile for $10 million dollars
There are even the eccentrics who have insured skills, like the ability to taste effectively. Such was the case of Chief Taster for Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, Egon Ronay. If that weren’t enough, there are even funnier policies that you can purchase if you look hard enough. For example, someone who “plays the field” can purchase paternity insurance to cover themselves in the event of a paternity suit. Fantasy Football players who pay for the privilege of organizing their star players each week are able to insure their star players against injury and be refunded their entrance fee should a player become injured.
If you are looking into insurance for the bizarre, strange, odd or absurd you can call The Watkins Syndicate of Lloyd’s of London. Caveat Emptor rules with these policies as they can cost you much more than a brand new (but reasonable) car in some cases. Value, as with beauty, could be argued is determined through the eyes of the insured. So, if you have some items that you think would never be insurable, think again.
